When OEM Is the Only Honest Recommendation
I manage procurement for a 200-person logistics facility in Houston. We run three McQuay rooftop units and one McQuay chiller in the older office building. I've been tracking our HVAC maintenance spending for six years — every invoice, every filter order, every failed part, logged in a cost-tracking spreadsheet that our CFO still jokes about. It adds up to roughly $140,000 a year.
Before we start, one clarification: if you searched 'mcquay cop arrested' and landed here, that's not what this article covers. This is about McQuay the HVAC equipment brand — replacement parts, maintenance budgets, and what actually saves money. I don't have information about that other matter, and I'm not going to comment on it.
The question everyone asks me, from our own maintenance team to other facility managers in the Houston area, is always some version of: Should we buy genuine McQuay parts, or save 30-50% with aftermarket parts? It sounds like a simple procurement question. It isn't.
The honest answer is that I've made both choices work, and I've made both choices cost me money. The difference is knowing which part goes in which category. Let me show you the comparison the way I actually evaluate it: total cost, not sticker price.
Dimension 1: Sticker Price vs Total Cost of Ownership
OEM parts are expensive. This is not a controversial statement. A genuine McQuay contactor might run you $75 where an aftermarket equivalent is $32. A fan motor might be $380 OEM vs $210 aftermarket. Any procurement person looks at that and sees a math problem.
The math is incomplete, though. I learned that the hard way in 2023.
One of our RTUs threw a control board error in August. The OEM replacement board was $430 from a McQuay parts distributor. My supplier talked me into an aftermarket board at $180 — same specs, he said. So I ordered it. Seemed like a no-brainer for someone whose job is defending the budget.
The board failed six weeks later, same error code. The second service call, the labor, the diagnostic time — total cost of that 'savings' was about $1,100, plus a warehouse that was uncomfortably warm for three evenings. If I remember right, the OEM board carried a warranty that would have covered the failure. The aftermarket board did not.
That's the classic penny-wise, pound-foolish trap. For electronics and anything critical, OEM wins on total cost because the cost of failure almost always dwarfs the part markup.
Dimension 2: Availability and Lead Times in Houston
Houston weather doesn't wait for parts. When a chiller goes down in July or August, you aren't comparing prices — you're comparing lead times.
McQuay, which now runs under Daikin Applied, has legitimate parts support, but OEM parts don't always sit in a Houston warehouse. Depending on the part, you might be looking at 2-5 business days from a regional distribution center. That's a long time for a down chiller.
Aftermarket parts are a different story. Common components — capacitors, contactors, belts, filters — are on the shelf at local HVAC supply houses all over Houston. Same-day pickup, no freight charge. For commodity parts, aftermarket wins on speed, and the specs are identical to the OEM box.
So this dimension comes down to: OEM for planned work, aftermarket for same-day emergencies, and buy your true critical spares before you ever need them. A $380 part on your shelf beats a $900 rush quote on your counter every single time.
Dimension 3: 16x20x1 Air Filters — the Small Part That Causes the Big Failures
Now the boring part, which might actually be the most important. The 16x20x1 air filter is the cheapest regular purchase we make. We buy MERV 8 filters by the case for around $16-25 each, depending on volume and brand, and swap them every 6-8 weeks in the summer months when the units are running hardest.
Here's the counterintuitive conclusion from six years of data: the cheapest component in the whole system is responsible for the most expensive failures I've seen. A clogged or collapsing filter restricts airflow, the coil starts to freeze, and suddenly you're looking at a compressor that's working itself to death for the sake of saving $20.
Do you need an 'OEM' filter for a McQuay unit? I've ordered both. The OEM filter I received came in a generic box with a generic label. It's a standard 1-inch filter. Buy a decent aftermarket filter with a MERV rating of 8 or higher, change it on schedule, and you're done. No facility was ever saved by the brand name on its filter; lots have been saved by actually changing it.
Which way to put an air filter in a furnace: up or down?
This is a question people type into search engines constantly, and the answer isn't 'up' or 'down.' The arrow on the filter points in the direction of the airflow — toward the blower or furnace.
Think about it like this: air comes from the return duct, passes through the filter, and then hits the blower. The arrow needs to point the same direction the air is traveling, which means it points at the blower. If the filter is in a ceiling return grille, the air moves upward into the grille, so the arrow points up. If it's in a floor return, the arrow points down. If it's in a horizontal filter slot, the arrow points toward the fan, not toward the sky.
I mention this because we had a filter installed backward in one of our older units (yes, by a professional crew). It collapsed in a few weeks and cost us an after-hours service call. That's a lesson I'd rather you learn from my spreadsheet than from your repair bill.
Dimension 4: 'Air Compressor' — the Search Everyone Gets Wrong
People search 'McQuay air compressor' all the time. Usually, what they actually mean is the refrigeration compressor in their rooftop unit or chiller — not a shop air compressor for filling tires. Those are completely different things. The one that matters for cooling is the compressor that moves refrigerant.
Here's the detail that surprised me after years of buying these: our three McQuay RTUs use Copeland scroll compressors. In many cases, the 'genuine McQuay' compressor is a Copeland compressor with a McQuay label — the same model number, the same specs. You can order the same compressor from a Copeland distributor in Houston for 20-30% less than the OEM box. On a $1,800-2,800 part, that's a $400-600 difference, which is not small.
But there's a tradeoff. The warranty runs through the distributor, not through McQuay/Daikin Applied. And you have to verify you're getting the exact same model and revision — 'compatible' is not good enough.
Our chiller is a different animal. It uses a larger screw compressor that McQuay designed specifically for that unit. As of early 2025, there is no meaningful aftermarket equivalent for that part. It comes through Daikin Applied parts support, and that's the end of the discussion. We budget for it and we plan around the lead time.
So here's the unexpected conclusion, and it's the one that will save you the most money: the most expensive part on our list is the one where aftermarket made the most sense for the RTUs — because it was literally the same part. The cheap parts don't need OEM. The medium-cost electronics are where OEM earns its money.
So What Should You Actually Buy?
After six years of documenting every HVAC purchase, these are the rules I actually use. Adapt them to your situation, but this is what survived contact with reality at our facility:
- RTU compressors (Copeland-style): aftermarket is acceptable if it's the exact same model number and you're comfortable with the distributor warranty. OEM if the unit is under a manufacturer warranty.
- Chiller screw compressors: OEM only. No realistic alternative, so buy it before you need it and put it in the capital budget.
- Control boards and electronics: OEM. I've already described how that lesson cost me roughly $900 in rework. Don't repeat it.
- Contactors, capacitors, belts: aftermarket is fine. Commodity parts with matchable specs.
- 16x20x1 air filters: aftermarket, MERV 8 minimum, stocked by the case, changed on a strict schedule. Arrow points toward the blower.
When OEM Is the Only Honest Recommendation
If your McQuay unit is under any kind of warranty, keep OEM parts in that system. A single aftermarket part in the wrong place can complicate a warranty claim that's worth far more than the part savings. That's not a gamble — it's a bad math problem.
And if a part keeps the building cool in August, or the warehouse running, or the server room alive — buy the option you can verify, and buy it before it fails. This isn't 'OEM beats aftermarket' across the board. It's 'know which category your part falls into before you order.'
There's no universal best choice here. I've had excellent results with aftermarket filters and painful results with aftermarket electronics. Your mileage depends on your equipment, your climate, and your tolerance for risk. The framework above is what worked on our spreadsheets.
