I'll say it plainly: if you're choosing between a heat pump and a furnace by looking only at the equipment price, you're about to make the same mistake I made in 2017. The machine itself is a small slice of the cost. The manual, the service access, and the conditions behind the efficiency number decide what that machine really costs over ten years.

That's why I now think in total cost of ownership (TCO). It sounds like consultant talk, but it's actually just a checklist from a guy who has made enough expensive mistakes to keep a list.

The Quote That Taught Me TCO

In my first year handling HVAC service orders, I quoted a server room cooling job for a small office. On paper, an Arctic Air Cooler looked like a budget hero. But I also look at integrated part load value (IPLV), or seasonal efficiency, because most buildings operate at partial load most of the time. If a spec sheet only shows peak COP, you're comparing a test condition, not your building.

Heat Pump vs Furnace: You're Asking the Wrong Question

I didn't check the contents. The DeWalt unit didn't include a regulator or a quick coupler, and the manual called for a different oil than I keep on the shelf. After buying the missing parts and the right oil, my savings was about $37.
