3. Run the fan and use tissue if direction is unclear
Turn the fan on and wait until it reaches normal speed. Hold a small piece of tissue in front of the filter opening. If the tissue gets pulled against the opening, you are on the upstream side. The air is being pulled through the filter toward the fan and coil, so the arrow on the new filter should point in the same direction you feel the pull. 4. Mark the frame before you close access
Use a permanent marker to write ROOM on the side that faces the room and FAN on the side that faces the coil. Do this before you slide the filter in. What I check before I sign off
After a filter replacement, I look for three signs: the arrow or label is visible, the filter sits flat in its track, and the date is written on the frame. If you cannot tell from the old filter's dust which direction it faced, do not use the dust as a guide. The dust says where airflow has been, not where it should go.
